Then bone parts can get closer together \u2192 pain, stiffness and less movement. <\/p><p data-start=\"643\" data-end=\"666\">But this is important:<\/p><p data-start=\"668\" data-end=\"759\"><strong data-start=\"671\" data-end=\"707\">Osteoarthritis = no ban on exercise<\/strong><br data-start=\"707\" data-end=\"710\"><strong data-start=\"713\" data-end=\"759\">Osteoarthritis = reason to keep moving smartly<\/strong><\/p><p data-start=\"761\" data-end=\"872\">For everyone in and around a <strong data-start=\"786\" data-end=\"805\">gym Ede<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"807\" data-end=\"822\">fitness Ede<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"826\" data-end=\"842\">CrossFit Ede<\/strong>, this is a crucial difference.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3e0abd81 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"3e0abd81\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Why exercising with osteoarthritis actually helps (and doesn't harm)<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-40f6ebf1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"40f6ebf1\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-start=\"944\" data-end=\"1065\">The idea that you &#8220;wear out&#8221; your joints by moving is persistent.<br data-start=\"1012\" data-end=\"1015\">But scientifically, that view is not true.<\/p><p data-start=\"1067\" data-end=\"1112\">Indeed, multiple studies show that:<\/p><ul data-start=\"1114\" data-end=\"1268\"><li data-section-id=\"11uo32d\" data-start=\"1114\" data-end=\"1153\">Strength training can reduce pain<\/li><li data-section-id=\"1bcoizh\" data-start=\"1154\" data-end=\"1204\">Movement improves joint function<\/li><li data-section-id=\"15k5l78\" data-start=\"1205\" data-end=\"1268\">Inactivity precisely causes more stiffness and limitations<\/li><\/ul><h5 data-section-id=\"1xdvdcw\" data-start=\"1270\" data-end=\"1302\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">What happens physiologically:<\/span><\/h5><ul data-start=\"1304\" data-end=\"1480\"><li data-section-id=\"u9t4kt\" data-start=\"1304\" data-end=\"1384\">Muscles around your joint become stronger \u2192 less stress on the joint<\/li><li data-section-id=\"s803ja\" data-start=\"1385\" data-end=\"1432\">Movement keeps your joint &#8220;lubricated&#8221;<\/li><li data-section-id=\"148d7wb\" data-start=\"1433\" data-end=\"1480\">You maintain freedom of movement (range of motion)<\/li><\/ul><p data-start=\"1482\" data-end=\"1554\">This is why we often say: <strong data-start=\"1508\" data-end=\"1529\">use it or lose it<\/strong> or<strong>motion is lotion <\/strong>(and this really applies here)<\/p><p data-start=\"1556\" data-end=\"1657\">Want to know how we approach this in practice? And that is almost always possible. Even with osteoarthritis.  <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-59ee17a9 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"59ee17a9\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\" data-settings=\"{&quot;background_background&quot;:&quot;classic&quot;}\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1479923a elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"1479923a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Common mistakes in sports with osteoarthritis (and why they don't add up)<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b6a4e2c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b6a4e2c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-start=\"2367\" data-end=\"2398\">This is where it often goes wrong \ud83d\udc47<\/p><h5 data-section-id=\"ib3ark\" data-start=\"2400\" data-end=\"2451\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">&#8220;I have to rest or it will get worse.&#8221;<\/span><\/h5><p data-start=\"2453\" data-end=\"2490\">Sounds logical. Is usually not smart. <\/p><p data-start=\"2492\" data-end=\"2519\">Prolonged rest provides:<\/p><ul data-start=\"2521\" data-end=\"2591\"><li data-section-id=\"1c2rsbv\" data-start=\"2521\" data-end=\"2543\">Less muscle strength<\/li><li data-section-id=\"1athq2d\" data-start=\"2544\" data-end=\"2562\">More rigidity<\/li><li data-section-id=\"1spe97m\" data-start=\"2563\" data-end=\"2591\">Poorer taxability<\/li><\/ul><p data-start=\"2593\" data-end=\"2633\">Result: more complaints, not less.<br><br><\/p><h5 data-section-id=\"iclblo\" data-start=\"2640\" data-end=\"2687\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">&#8220;My joint wears down further when I train&#8221;<\/span><\/h5><p data-start=\"2689\" data-end=\"2754\">There is <strong data-start=\"2695\" data-end=\"2716\">no strong evidence<\/strong> that normal exercise accelerates osteoarthritis.<\/p><p data-start=\"2756\" data-end=\"2768\">Indeed:<\/p><ul data-start=\"2770\" data-end=\"2908\"><li data-section-id=\"1y2yycc\" data-start=\"2770\" data-end=\"2821\">Exercise actually helps reduce symptoms<\/li><li data-section-id=\"pfwwr1\" data-start=\"2822\" data-end=\"2908\">Even running does not seem to automatically worsen osteoarthritis with healthy load<\/li><\/ul><p data-start=\"2910\" data-end=\"3002\">\ud83d\udc49 The problem is often not moving<br data-start=\"2946\" data-end=\"2949\">\ud83d\udc49 The problem is moving incorrectly or suddenly too much<\/p><h5 data-section-id=\"5t94k7\" data-start=\"3009\" data-end=\"3050\"><br><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">&#8220;Pain means I have to stop.&#8221;<\/span><\/h5><p data-start=\"3052\" data-end=\"3064\">Not always.<\/p><p data-start=\"3066\" data-end=\"3089\">With osteoarthritis, the following often applies:<\/p><ul data-start=\"3091\" data-end=\"3181\"><li data-section-id=\"1w44y0k\" data-start=\"3091\" data-end=\"3143\"><strong data-start=\"3093\" data-end=\"3141\">mild to moderate pain during movement = okay<\/strong><\/li><li data-section-id=\"suzjrx\" data-start=\"3144\" data-end=\"3181\">as long as symptoms subside thereafter<\/li><\/ul><p data-start=\"3183\" data-end=\"3220\">\ud83d\udc49 Pain is a signal, not a stop button<\/p><h5 data-section-id=\"138ev5q\" data-start=\"3227\" data-end=\"3273\"><br><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">&#8220;I have to wait until it gets really bad.&#8221;<\/span><\/h5><p data-start=\"3275\" data-end=\"3312\">This is perhaps the biggest pitfall.<\/p><p data-start=\"3314\" data-end=\"3334\">The longer you wait:<\/p><ul data-start=\"3336\" data-end=\"3434\"><li data-section-id=\"1z0wpkq\" data-start=\"3336\" data-end=\"3360\">the stiffer you get<\/li><li data-section-id=\"34jtwt\" data-start=\"3361\" data-end=\"3394\">the weaker your muscles become<\/li><li data-section-id=\"2kkg8d\" data-start=\"3395\" data-end=\"3434\">the greater the barrier to entry<\/li><\/ul><p data-start=\"3436\" data-end=\"3506\">\ud83d\udc49 Just starting <strong data-start=\"3464\" data-end=\"3487\">exercise<\/strong> early with <strong data-start=\"3464\" data-end=\"3487\">osteoarthritis<\/strong> makes a difference<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-51e52f11 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"51e52f11\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">How we approach sports with osteoarthritis in our box in Ede<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3d6c653d elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3d6c653d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-start=\"3578\" data-end=\"3668\">In our <strong data-start=\"3586\" data-end=\"3602\">CrossFit box in Ede<\/strong>, we don&#8217;t look at your limitation, we look at your potential.<\/p><p data-start=\"3670\" data-end=\"3683\">Meaning:<\/p><ul data-start=\"3685\" data-end=\"3832\"><li data-section-id=\"1wjhyds\" data-start=\"3685\" data-end=\"3724\">Intake and personal adjustments<\/li><li data-section-id=\"1rdi84j\" data-start=\"3725\" data-end=\"3758\">Continuous coaching on technique<\/li><li data-section-id=\"1vmga13\" data-start=\"3759\" data-end=\"3787\">Scaling each workout<\/li><li data-section-id=\"1698zr8\" data-start=\"3788\" data-end=\"3832\">Focus on long-term (not quick wins)<\/li><\/ul><p data-start=\"3834\" data-end=\"3894\">Even with symptoms, you can often train as usual.
